I think never a week goes by where we get a chance to help Impact struggle through a homework problem or match concept that was originally out of reach. This week, we did academic-style olympics, kinda funny, since the real Summer Olympics are just around the corner. Well, I’ll tell you, we’re awfully proud of our own olympiads.

It was actually pretty cool, because some of the kids never went to the zoo, even though it’s right here in San Francisco. I remember visiting when I was a kid growing up in San Francisco. I’m glad I get a chance to share this with my Impact students.

Whenever we get a chance, we want to give Impact students experiences that are, well, out of the ordinary. So this time, we had them slap on backpacks and we ventured into the big land of Cal, on the big student day called Cal Day. It’s a day where the UC Berkeley campus opens it doors to all the incoming students of the year, and this year, to a crowd of 2nd and 3rd graders. We took a tour of the campus, visited some popular building like Valley Life Science Building which is a life-size two story T-rex. Um, our very own Jurassic Park. I think it’s, or should I say, her name is Sue. Quite a thing to see.

Instead, you fill up a 2-liter bottle with water, slap some cork on to the end, and find a brave soul with a bike pump on hand. Kaboom! These things go 50-feet in to the air! No kidding!! This was all part of a physics enrichment program where we taught the students Newtonian physics … law of action/reaction stuff. I think the highlight for all the leads was seeing Daryl and others get drenched when pumping up the rockets. Ha!

Wow, the website is finally done! Our staff have also been eagerly preparing for the start of another impactful season! From transportation logistics to curriculum, we’re excited to have this change to bring your kids into a high energy learning environment. We have one goal in mind. Namely, for your child to reach his/her highest potential!

One of the core motivations here at ImpACT is understanding how to overcome the sense of hopelessness that we find often in kids who grow up in disadvantaged conditions. Where do you start? We think it begins with relationships with a caring group of adult role models. ImpACT volunteers are committed to that end. Being there for the kids as a community of support.
