Academic Boost
For the past three weeks, we had another round of Academic Boost classes, this time covering topics in history, magnets, and microbes. In the history classes, we got to meet Harriet Tubman, and learn how she helped free the slaves during the Civil War time period. Everyone seemed really excited to meet such a historical figure and asked many questions regarding her past.
In our magnet class, we learned the difference between the north and south poles and had time to do different activities with the magnets. The kids were able to take home their own magnets to further experiment with at home.
The microbes class generated a lot of excitement as well. We grew our very own bacteria, gathered from various places (from the air to our hands and mouths), in petri dishes. A week later the groups got to examine their bacteria, and we all got to see how much and how quickly they had grown. This created a lot of commotion from the kids, as most had never seen bacteria in this form before.
As a team lead, I really enjoyed this round of Academic Boost. Watching the kids having so much fun while learning is something they’ll be able to keep for a long time, and I’m glad to have been to witness this.
